2. 1 Peter 1:19.

Commentators have suggested that the redemptive blood is the counterpart to the sacrifice at Jewish proselytes’ conversion (Reicke, 85), an interpretation that makes sense if Peter’s audience represent Gentile* converts who rejected their former idolatry.* Because texts addressing conversion primarily stress circumcision and baptism,* however, so narrow an allusion might have been obscure to ancient hearers (especially Gentiles). That the allusion is to Passover is far more likely (e.g., Selwyn, 146), especially given probable contextual allusions like “girding one’s mind up” (1 Pet 1:13; see Ex 12:11; Kelly, 65; Reicke, 83; contrast Best, 84).
